Missoula BMWMOA with Andrew 1998

July 4, 1998 (Saturday): Left Deer Valley, Park City, US 40 east through Heber. Stopped in Jensen for lunch - hot dog with buttered bun. Proceeded into Colorado to Dinosaur National Park and was advised at the ranger station that the campgrounds were on about 7 miles of rough dirt road, so we went back into Utah and went to (probably) the Green River campground - about 7 miles north of US 40. Set up camp and then went into Jensen for fireworks that evening. Before we went to the fireworks the ranger gave a talk.

July 5 (Sunday): Broke camp, spent an hour or so in the museum, had breakfast at the 7-11 Ranch Restaurant in Vernal where you found a stuffie. North on US 191 through Flaming Gorge to Rock Springs, WY, continue to WY 28 to Lander then Riverton. Picked up some food at a gas station/convenience store. We camped outside Riverton on the Wind River. Sunday after holiday, so the campground was trashed and there were swarms of ants around the tent. (260 miles)

July 6 (Monday): Next morning north on 789 to Thermopolis where we had breakfast - the building across the street had Swastikas on the front and the restaurant had a sign that pointed out that it was an ancient Indian symbol. WY 120 through Cody, WY then WY 296 (Chief Joseph Highway to US 212 where we went east to Beartooth Pass where you ran around in the snow. West on 212 to Cooke City and into Yellowstone where we camped, probably near Tower Junction. (about 250 miles) (It is possible that we went directly to the campground, unloaded the bike, then rode up Beartooth Pass.)

July 7 (Tuesday): Roamed around in the park (did we hike down into Yellowstone Canyon?) had lunch probably near Old Faithful. Began raining and rode south out of Yellowstone US 287 by Grand Teton Nat'l Park to Jackson where we spent the night at a motel - the first one we saw that had a vacancy. Went into town and you went to Ripley's Believe It Or Not. (about 190 miles)

July 8 (Wednesday): South on US 287 and west on WY 22 into Idaho (road becomes ID 31 through Swan Valley (we could see a building fire in the distance) to Idaho Falls where we stopped (Walmart?) and got a camera for you. US 20 west to Arco, ID where we camped outside of town next to a river at a private RV/tent campground. (165 miles) This doesn't seem right - I don't remember staying near Arco, and it was a very short day. Could we have gone to Craters of the Moon?

July 9 (Thursday): US 93 north all the way to Missoula. Near Missoula the weather became very windy with a little rain. We stopped at a gas station to put on rain gear. In Missoula we checked into the BMWMOA rally and we set up the tent - you were inside holding it upright against the wind while I tried to stake it down. We met up with John Caramagno and Carol (his wife), who were staying at a nearby motel. The motel had lost power, but it was restored. (290 miles)

July 10 (Friday): There was a crack in one of the panniers, so I found an auto parts store that had a fiberglass repair kit and I fixed the pannier while you saw a movie at a mall. Later we wandered around the rally site.
July 11 (Saturday): John and you and I wandered around the rally, you went back to the tent for a nap, and a storm came through.

July 12 (Sunday): We broke camp at the rally and went south on US 93 then west on US 12 over Lolo Pass (this is part of the Lewis and Clark trail) to Kooskia and on to Grangeville and south on US 95. Crossed the Snake River north of Boise and went east on US 20 to Vale, OR where we stayed in a motel. We were tired and it was very hot. I went for a run and you tried to watch TV, but there wasn't a good signal. (355 miles)

July 13 (Monday): This was a long day, but we gained an hour heading west. Followed US 20 to west of Burns, OR, then south on US 395 through Lakeview and into California past Goose Lake to Alturas then 299 to CA 89 south into Lassen Volcanic National Park where we camped in the north end of the park. (425 miles)

July 14 (Tuesday): Rode through the park and followed 89 to CA 32 which we rode south to Chico where I didn't stop for gas, rode south on a small road, probably to near Gridley where I ran out of gas. Guys in a pickup gave us a ride to the nearest town, got a can of gas, then another guy drove us to the bike. You realized that you'd left your fanny pack with the camera in the pickup truck. We stopped at the gas station in Gridley, hoping that the guys in the pickup might have returned to drop off the fanny pack but they hadn't. Continued on to Woodland, Dixon, to US 80 and home. That may have been the time you got off the bike and kissed the ground. (300+ miles)
