Canadian plains and forests, Lake Superior, Cleveland, Pig Roast. Midwest, Southwest, and home

I rode on Highway 55 across the plains in central Alberta and into Saskatchewan. This is a well-maintained two lane road that has little traffic, and most of that seems to be local. I rode through Cold Lake, Meadow Lake, Green Lake, Big River, and down to Prince Albert right in the middle of the Province. If you examine a map you will see that there are many lakes and rivers in that part of Canada. The weather, which had been so cold and wet in British Columbia, Yukon, and Alaska, was now sunny and warm. There were no curvy roads or mountains, but it was still very pleasant to ride along for hours with my thoughts.

In Prince Albert I went south on Highway 2 to St. Louis (not that one) and turned east on Highway 3 to Tisdale, Crooked River, and into Manitoba. The farmland turned to forest and at Highway 10 I went south to Swan River and Pine River. At Highway 5 I went east again through Dauphin and Ste. Rose du Lac and shortly thereafter rode a causeway across Lake Manitoba to Ashern where I turned south on Highway 68, which soon ran into Highway 6, a larger road that runs into Highway 1 near Winnipeg. I bypassed Winnipeg on Highway 44 and spent the night at a hotel in Whitemouth. The cafe next door was closed, but the bar - where I was the only customer -was open and I had a small frozen pizza. The hotel had no A/C, no Wi-Fi, and the bathroom was down the hall. There were railroad tracks across the road - I think the hotel was probably built for train crews - but I only heard a couple of trains in the early morning.






The next morning I stayed on 44 through woods and parks and stopped in West Hawk Lake for an excellent breakfast. How can you not stop at the Nite Hawk Cafe?





At Highway 17 I went east into Ontario and along the northern side of Lake of the Woods, and then went south on Highway 71 through Nestor Falls. This looks like vacation country with the forest and lakes and cabins. I'd been seeing signs advertising Nestor Falls, and though the actual falls was pleasant enough, it was somewhat less grand than I'd expected.





Now on Highway 11 I stopped at a Tim Horton's in Fort Frances, which is just across the border from International Falls, Minnesota. Deciding to do a little bit of tourism, I asked the young lady behind the counter where the fort was. She gave me an uncomprehending look, and I said, "Fort Frances, you know, there must be a fort here." An older woman walked by and told us that the fort had burned down some years before, and that there had been talk of rebuilding it, but nothing had ever been done. "Typical!" said the young woman. She was wearing various pieces of face jewelry, and her hair was dyed in more than one color. I figured she would be out of that town and on to someplace more interesting as soon as she could. It was actually a rather attractive town along a river with large, old buildings downtown.

Highway 11 ends at Thunder Bay and I rode Highway 17 through town and along then north end of Lake Superior.


The road follows the Lake to Sault Ste. Marie, where I crossed the border into Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and spent the night at a Days Inn across from Studebaker's Restaurant.





The next morning was cool and gray and I rode on I-75 south for a few miles and then got off at St. Ignace and rode on US 23, which follows the western shore of Lake Huron. This is a pleasantly scenic road with a low 45 mph speed limit, many small towns, little traffic, and a lot of vacation cabins. There are also motels - I think I've heard about this place in a country western song.






The day was becoming more gray and cooler and I'd seen enough of Lake Huron, so I re-connected with I-75 and followed it to Flint and the US 23 (a four-lane freeway) into Ohio and then I-80/90 from Toledo to my sister's house in Lakewood on the west side of Cleveland. The Ohio Turnpike (I-80) is notorious for its never-ending road construction and for the zealous Highway Patrol speed limit enforcement. Within a few miles I saw five or six cars stopped by the road getting tickets.

I spent a week with my sister and her husband, and was able to visit my nephew and nieces and their families. I also installed 7/8 inch barbacks from Twisted Throttle that I'd ordered. After a week on the bike I noticed I had a tightness across my shoulders, and I thought that a slightly more upright seating position might help - and it did. I also had a minor service and a new front tire installed - a Heidenau K76 to match the rear tire - at a Suzuki dealer. Heidenau tires are not widely distributed in the US, and I'd ordered the tire from the distributor in Cedar Rapids, IA to be shipped to the Suzuki dealer in Aurora, OH. After the bike was done I rode to Euclid and went by the two houses where I grew up. I've always done that when I'm in Cleveland, but I don't think that I need to anymore.

 The Pig Roasts began in 1968 in Highland Park, Illinois, and they've been going on every few years ever since. There were several in Highland Park, a couple in Chicago, several more in Wisconsin, one each in Ohio and Maryland, and even one in Walnut Creek, California. For the last 15 years or so they've been at a farm in Grant Park, Illinois, south of Chicago just across the Indiana border.

 

We used to dig a large pit in the ground and roast the pig in it, but there is now a more professional arrangement.








What with many of the original attendees, friends, relatives, sons and daughters, and neighbors, there are anywhere from 60 to 100 people who show up. The Pigs used to be something of a drunken party going through the night with music by the Rolling Stones blaring at top volume, but these days the drinking is moderate, the music is country and western, and the party is mostly over by midnight. There is a tradition of fireworks, and for the last several pig roasts they have been provided by a professional company owned by one of the regulars.






My wife had flown out for the Pig and the next morning we had breakfast in nearby Manteno with several friends. I had left my jacket on the back of the bike, but when I came out after breakfast, it was gone. I thought that perhaps I'd went off from the motel without putting on the jacket, so I retraced my route to no avail. It was a Sunday, and no motorcycle shops were open, but fortunately it was a warm day. I said goodbye to Carol and went up to Wisconsin in a small caravan of a car, truck and motorcycle. We all stayed at a friend's house in the country near Greenbush, and the next day we drove into Oshkosh where I purchased a replacement jacket at a motorcycle dealer.On the way back to Greenbush we stopped at Elkhart Lake, where in the 1950's there were sports car races through town.

Leaving my friends, I took WI 23 to to Fond du Lac and connected with US 151, which goes southwest into Iowa. It is a major road, and alternates between two-lane and four lane divided. In Anamosa I stopped at the National Motorcycle Museum and spent a couple of hours looking at bikes. Since the last time I'd been to Anamosa the museum had moved from downtown to a much larger building outside of town.

In Cedar Rapids I turned on US 30 west and followed it across Iowa and into Nebraska. Near Kearney, I went south on NE 44 and then rode west on familiar US 34 into Colorado. In Brush, CO I joined I-76 and rode to Louisville near Boulder for a quick visit with my wife's niece and her family. I rode south bypassing most of Denver and connected with US 285, which is a scenic but well-traveled road through the mountains. The road goes over 9000 foot passes and through the towns of Fairplay and Poncha Springs. I spent the night in Alamosa at US 160, and the following morning continued on 285 to Antonito just north of the New Mexico border, where I turned off on CO 17 and rode over the 10000 foot Cumbres Pass on mountain roads and through scenic high valleys and into Chama. The Cumbres and Toltec railroad is a favorite with its old steam engine pulling passenger cars through the mountains from Chama to Antonito, and as I rode along 17 I had several sightings of the train.




A few miles south of Chama I turned west on US 64, which is another scenic road through hills and valleys until it gets to Farmington, which isn't scenic at all. The weather had turned windy and wet, and I rode through a heavy shower before finally stopping in Farmington to put on my rain pants and rain gloves. I crossed into Arizona and at Mexican Water went south on US 191, which goes by Canyon de Chelly National Monument. By this time it was late afternoon and the wind was blowing hard, and I rode through a few sprinkles to Chambers, AZ at I-40 where I spent the night. The next morning I rode on I-40 to Holbrook, and then took AZ 77 to Show Low, where I had breakfast. This is a popular motorcycle riding area, and there were several bikes in the restaurant lot. I continued on AZ 77, which joined with US 60, south through the mountains to Globe. There was light traffic, curvy roads, and saguaro cacti all along the road as I got further south. In Globe I stayed on 77 south towards Tucson, and then picked up US 89 into town. 

Jim was an old friend from work who moved to Tucson about a dozen years ago. He and I took a couple of motorcycle trips together and he and his wife came back to the Bay Area often enough that we stayed in touch. He was diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago and did well for awhile, but he'd been deteriorating and was in a hospice. I visited with him and we talked about old friends and rides we'd taken. We used to talk a lot about politics, but with little time left it seemed pointless to both of us. I spent the night at a motel nearby, and in the morning I visited him again before heading north on I-10 towards Phoenix. 

In Phoenix I picked up I-17 and followed that north before exiting at AZ 179 towards Sedona, a very picturesque and expensive town with red rock bluffs surrounding it. It had showered just before I arrived, and the landscape was very beautiful in the afternoon light. 

Sedona is supposed to be at the nexus of energy flows, and I wanted to buy a few crystals to give to the family - sort of a joke, but the crystals were also lovely. What better place to purchase crystals than at the Center for the New Age?




Crystals safely in my tank bag, I rode US 89A north out of town - a narrow and curvy road that follows a river into the hills. There was little traffic in my direction and I was able to maintain a good pace, although there were several jams heading south. Outside Flagstaff at I-40 I went west to Kingman, where I spent the night at a Super 8. I even got a discount because the air-conditioning wasn't working at full capacity, although a rainstorm had cooled everything off and it was quite comfortable. Coming back from diner I saw a huge double rainbow arching across the sky, but my camera was back in the room.

The next morning I took US 93 past Hoover Dam through Henderson and into Las Vegas. After breakfast I decided to ride the ring road around the city, which went by huge apartment complexes, many of which looked to be very empty. I took US 95 past the Death Valley turnoff and then took NV 266 over Lida Summit and into California, where the road becomes CA 168 and goes over a couple of passes before ending at US 395 in Big Pine. This was about 90 miles of deserted, winding, and rolling road.

US 395 is the major north-south road on the eastern side of the Sierra - there are hills and curves, but it isn't really challenging. It is well-paved and well-maintained, and varies from two-lane to four lanes. I stopped early in Lee Vining, spending the night there and having diner at Nicely's restaurant for old times sake. 

The next morning I rode north on 395 to Minden, where I had breakfast at the Carson Valley Inn with Dave, a friend with whom I used to work in Silicon Valley. From Minden it was a familiar ride to the Bay Area on CA 88 into California, then CA 89 through Markleeville and CA 4 over Ebbett's Pass and into Angel's Camp and the Central Valley. From Stockton it was I-5 and I-205 through Tracy and Livermore and into the Bay Area.

My timing was good and I stopped at a restaurant in Foster City at a retirement party for a former work friend. Carol and other friends were there as well, and after an hour of socializing, I rode on my familiar route back home to San Francisco, 42 days and 13,500 miles after I left.

Arctic Circle, Chicken, Dawson City, Canadian Plains

Leaving the Westmark Hotel early on Sunday morning, John and I rode north out of town on AK 2 and at Livengood we went north on AK 11, The Dalton Highway, also known as The Haul Road. The Dalton is paved as far as the Yukon River, where it becomes a mostly gravel road with occasional roughly paved sections.


We stopped at the Yukon River motel/restaurant for breakfast.



At this point we are only 60 miles from the Arctic Circle, our destination for the trip. John had been as far as Coldfoot the year before, and he said that the road deteriorates after the Arctic Circle, although it isn't that bad. Beyond Coldfoot the road deteriorates as it climbs over the Richardson Range, and it can be a handful in wet weather


The scenery is pleasant rather than spectacular along the Dalton. In the distance you can see Needle Rock, a local landmark.


We took a few pictures at the little park at the Arctic Circle - there were rangers in a small, mosquito net enclosed station there who would give you information and snap your picture, as well as sign a certificate that showed you'd been there.


Riding back down the Dalton you can see the Alaska pipeline, which is the reason the road is there, from many places.






A few miles from the Yukon River we stopped for lunch at the Hot Spot, a small restaurant that is run by two women, who have a reputation for not suffering fools - well, for being cranky. They seemed to be quite pleasant when we were there.






We had lucked out with our weather since the Dalton wasn't slippery with mud, and also that because of the recent rain the road was not dusty - about the best conditions you can hope for. Since it was a Sunday, there wasn't a lot of truck traffic or active road construction. The next morning we stopped at Adventure Cycleworks in Fairbanks, where I had a new Heidenau K76 rear tire installed and an oil change, and John also had a new tire installed. It's kind of a funky, father and son shop, which is run out of the proprietor's garage, but we had appointments and were in and out of there in a couple of hours. The riding season in Alaska is only about four months, and the motorcycle shops probably get 90% of their yearly business during that short time. Many riders from the lower 48 ride up there and discover that after 5000 miles their tires are worn, so they call around and find out that the shops may not have what they need in stock, and even if they do they can't work on the bike for three days. John and I had both called many days before to schedule the appointment and to ensure that the tires we needed were available.

The weather was back to rain and cold and we rode south on AK 3, the George Parks Highway, and after an hour or so we stopped at Rose's Cafe for breakfast and to warm up.






The following day continued cold and damp as we rode by Denali, although the clouds parted occasionally to offer a view of the mountains.


We spent the night at a motel near the water in Anchorage and met John's brother and sister-in-law who were in town on vacation. Over dinner we discussed watching the Fourth of July fireworks, but when we discovered that they wouldn't begin until 2:30 AM - when it was finally dark - we decided against it.

The next day dawned gray with a few sprinkles, but it cleared up as we rode out of town and stopped at Jeannie's Java for coffee and rhubarb pie at the junction of AK 3 and Highway 1, the Glenn Highway. 


The first time we stopped there (on a previous trip) I asked Jeannie where she got the rhubarb, and she pointed to a small vegetable garden near the road. We stayed on the Glenn Highway through Glennallen and skirted the Wrangel Mountains and spent the night in Tok, again at Fast Eddie's but this time in a cabin.

We were up early the next morning to a gray but dry day and we rode out of town and at Tetlin Junction turned onto the Taylor Highway (AK 3) and headed towards the town of Chicken. The 95 miles to Chicken is rough but paved, and there was little traffic.


We stopped at the Chicken Creek Cafe for a delicious breakfast. Chicken is an old mining town, now a tourist destination and part of the annual Dust to Dawson motorcycle rally.


After Chicken the road is unpaved, and the weather began clouding up and by the time we reached the Yukon border it was raining again. By this time the Wee was showing the effects of the mud riding.



Border formalities over, we rode unpaved Canada Highway 9, the Top of the World Highway, towards Dawson City.





We were quite isolated in the beautiful scenery.


We took a free ferry across the Yukon River. At this point the river is moving swiftly, and the captain steers sharply upstream and lets the current carry him downstream to the landing on the other side.





Once over the river we rode on paved Highway 2, the Klondike Highway, for 25 miles into Dawson City, where we booked rooms at the Downtown Hotel.





Except for Highway 2, the streets of Dawson City are unpaved. The town has been rebuilt and preserved, but retains some of the flavor of the Klondike gold rush days.





We spent an interesting hour at a self-directed museum that has letters, artifacts, photographs, and newspaper clippings from the gold rush and mining days. The Honda Gold Wing in the picture below is an example of how not to pack. Not only do you not want weight hanging way off the back of the bike, the stuff there will get incredibly muddy if the weather is wet, although I suppose that it might provide a good cushion in case of a rear end collision.


The next morning we rode down the Klondike Highway, Highway 2, and had breakfast at the Moose Creek Lodge.





The road is in good shape and was mostly deserted on that day. It goes along the Yukon River, and I learned from a sign at a turnout that during the gold rush the steamboats would burn through 120 cords of wood going from Whitehorse to Dawson City.






In Whitehorse we joined the Alcan again and spent the night at a lodge outside of Teslin, and the next morning we were up early to greet a cold and drizzly day. We knew from the ride up the Alcan that many service areas for gas, food, and lodging along the way had closed since the last time we were there, so we made a point to stop at Rancheria and spent an hour there having breakfast and warming up. The parking lot looked like the scene at a motorcycle rally.




A hundred miles later John went south on Highway 37, the Cassiar, and I continued on the Alcan. John was going to meet a friend of ours in California and ride around for a few days, while I intended to ride across Canada to Hudson Bay. 

The area along the Liard River is know for its wildlife, and it isn't unusual to see bears, mountain sheep, and buffalo along or even on the road. When I stopped for gas in Liard River I mentioned seeing the Grizzly bear and the cub, and the woman said that it was part of a family of three (mom and two cubs) and well known in the area.





I rode over Muncho Pass and by Kluane Lake, and in contrast to the previous two times I'd been there, the weather was quite decent.




It's a fine curvy ride once over the pass, but I spotted a couple of motorcycles along the road, and one on its side in the ditch. The bike had a trailer attached, and the rider appeared to be injured, but not seriously. He and his wife were part of a small group, and someone had already gone into Toad Crossing to get help. I stayed around until an ambulance came. The other riders were going to wait for a truck to pick up the bike. I spent the night at the motel in Toad Creek, where I'd stayed a couple of years ago. The next morning I had a conversation with an older guy (like me) on a Suzuki DL650, like mine. He had most of the same modifications on his bike that I'd made to mine. He was from Oklahoma and headed home, and we both agreed that the Wee was a fine bike for solo touring. 

I stopped for breakfast in Fort Nelson at the Coffee 'n' Crumbs cafe, where I'd been to on previous trips with my friends. The place used to be called the Rocky Mountain Cafe, but it was still owned by the same woman. She recognized me and asked where my traveling companions were.






The weather continued to improve as I rode to Dawson Creek and the terminus of the Alcan Highway. I took Highway 64 out of Dawson Creek and into Alberta, and spent the night in Dunvegan. I had dinner at a Chinese buffet restaurant with a Scandinavian name, and the next morning rode on Highway 2 through Peace River and suddenly I was in the Canadian plains with miles of canola (rapeseed) fields on either side of the road.





I had breakfast late the next morning at a restaurant in Slave Lake, where the picture below was on the wall.





It is titled Destiny Highway - I can only assume that James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart have a universal appeal.

Not far out of Slave Lake I turned on Highway 55 and rode through Athabasca and continued on that road across the plains. Apparently, many Ukranians had settled in that part of Canada and several towns featured large, Orthodox churches.

Arctic Circle - 2012


The bike: I purchased my 2008 Suzuki DL650 in the fall of 2011 for the specific purpose of riding it to the Arctic Circle. It had 8600 miles on it and came with lowered suspension, heated grips, a larger windscreen, and a Givi top case. I raised the suspension back to the stock height, and added a center stand, engine guards, aluminum panniers, headlight grill, skid plate, radiator protector, and an oil cooler protector. I also swapped the 15 tooth countershaft sprocket for one with 16 teeth to lower the RPMs at highway cruising speeds. I have a BMW R1150RA that has been to Alaska before, but I thought that the lighter weight of the Wee (as the DL650 is affectionately known), its better weather protection, its 19" front wheel, and 90/10 street/dirt tires would be a better bet on the several hundred miles of gravel road that I expected to encounter. When I purchased the bike I thought that I would remove the top case, but after using the bike for six months for commuting and running errands, I decided to leave it on. The stock Suzuki seat was fine for riding around the Bay Area, but after a bit of discomfort after a 400 mile day ride, I decided to purchase an aftermarket Sargent seat, which proved to be very comfortable.

Departure: My friend, Marty, came by the house at 9 AM on June 20, and we headed across the Golden Gate Bridge and north on 101. We took Highway 37 across the wetlands to Vallejo and went east on I-80, and then north on I-505 (to bypass Sacramento) and then north on I-5. The weather was warm but pleasant enough, and we stayed on I-5 to Redding, where we went on CA 299 to Alturas and met John there at the Hacienda Motel. I've stayed at the Hacienda enough times over the years that I think I should get a frequent guest discount. John has a big BMW R1200GS Adventure, but for this trip he rode his 800cc BMW F650GS twin. Like me, he thought a lighter bike might be better suited for the type of roads we'd be on.

The next day we rode north on US 395 into Oregon and followed it through the mountains in the eastern part of the state, going over several 5000 foot passes. This is dry, high plains country, not spectacular but scenic enough and there was little traffic. In Pendleton, OR we turned on OR 11 and went into Washington, where we picked up US 12 in Walla Walla. We followed that road and then OR 127 to Walla Walla, where we met Dan, a friend of ours from Chicago, who joined us on his BMW R1200RT for the ride to Alaska. We all rode north on US 19 towards Spokane.

The Northwest corner of Washington is part of the scenic Selkirk Loop, a series of roads that goes through the Selkirk mountains in Washington, British Columbia, and Idaho. North of Spokane we rode on US 2 to Sand Point where Marty continued east to ride to Milwaukee where he would visit family. The rest of us went north on WA 20, 211, and 31 to the border crossing at Nelway, BC. The weather had been getting cooler and grayer, and we had first a few sprinkles and then a light drizzle as we rode up BC 6, stopping at a hotel in Nelson for the night. Nelson must be where all the Canadian hippies retire to, and there are many shops that sell crystals, organic and vegetarian foods, crafts, and incense. There were young people there, but also a lot of older people (like us) - the guys with long gray ponytails, and the women in loose, long dresses. Nelson is known as the "pot capital" of Canada, and that might explain why we saw more Canadian patrol cars in the short ride from the border than we would in all the rest of Canada.

It rained overnight, and the next morning was cool and promised more rain. In fact we would have cool (50-60F) weather and rain every day until we arrived in Fairbanks. Apparently, we had just missed some unseasonably warm and dry weather, because every time we stopped, someone would come up and tell us that it had been 30C the week before. Outside of Nelson we picked up BC 3A into Balfour, where we took a ferry across Kootenay Lake to Kootenay Bay.

What with the scenic lake and the surrounding mountains, this is a popular tourist area, but this early in the season and with unpleasant weather, there wasn't much traffic. We stopped in Crawford, a town of artisans, at a broom shop, where brooms for the Harry Potter promotional tour were made.





Route 3A stays close to the lake and we followed it to Creston, where it ends. We took BC 3 and then 95 (the Crowsnest) to Cranbrook and then BC 93 north to Radium Hot Springs, where we spent the night at a motel. The rain had stopped and we had plenty of light to walk up the road to the hot springs, which were closed by the time we got there.

The next morning (June 24) greeted us with cold, hard rain. We rode into Banff National Park and went north on the Ice Fields Parkway. John and I had stopped at Lake Louise three years ago on another Alaska trip, and while the lake and surrounding area is beautiful, it is a prime tourist destination, with a two level parking lot full of tour buses and RVs, a large ugly hotel, and people everywhere. Dan had never been there, and although he said he'd be happy to keep that status, I insisted we stop. We all agreed that we never needed to stop there again. The Ice Fields Parkway is usually a beautiful ride, with rugged mountains all around, glaciers, and a well-maintained and curvy road. However, on that day with cold rain and fog that obscured the views it was just a wet slog to Jasper, where we had planned to go west on Highway 16 to Prince George. Unfortunately, there had been a mud slide on 16 and the road was closed. The rain had stopped, but there was no estimate of when the road would be cleared, so we found a vacancy at a motel in town (the rooms were going fast to other stranded travelers) and had the opportunity for a pleasant walk around Jasper.

The next morning started out clear and we were told that Highway 16 was open, although with one way traffic control in sections. We rode by the mud slide area where workers were busy clearing the road, and continued on 16, the Yellowhead Highway, along the Frasier River with mountains on either side to Prince George. We stayed on 16 through Vanderhoof, Burns Lake, and Smithers, and into the Hazelton Mountains. At Kitwanga, we went north on 37 to Meziadin junction, where we were anticipating a gas station/general store/restaurant, but the place had apparently burned down and there was little left except a concrete pad and some rubble. We took 37A to Stewart, stopping for pictures of the Bear Glacier which comes right down to the river that the road runs alongside. The rain had returned, and although the road is curvy and usually a delight, we took it easy out of deference to the wet surface, and also to gravel on the road.

We were sad to discover that the restaurant at the Sealaska Inn was no long open - the owner had passed away a couple of years ago and his wife didn't want to bother running the restaurant. It was raining and cold the next morning, and when I looked out the window of the motel room, I saw a large, black bear in the back of a pickup truck parked across the road. Apparently, the owner had left a big plastic garbage bag in his truck, and the bear was looking for breakfast.



The locals are accustomed to bears wandering around town, and as I snapped away from the safety of the motel room door, a man came riding by on his bicycle. He yelled and waved his arms at the bear, who climbed down from the truck and lumbered off into the woods.

My son and Dan and I stayed in Hyder on another motorcycle trip in 2004. At that time we'd had a delicious breakfast at a restaurant there, but, unfortunately, it closed a couple of years ago. We loaded the bikes and rode back to Stewart and to Meziadin Junction, where we continued on Highway 37 to Bell 2, where we stopped to warm up and have breakfast. Outside the restaurant we saw two bicycles loaded down with camping gear. They belonged to a Canadian couple, who were on their honeymoon and intended to ride all the way to Tierra Del Fuego. Note the duct tape on the front tire of the guy's bike - he said that he'd get a new tire at a bicycle shop in Nelson, which was about 200 miles away.




The Cassiar Highway had been officially paved its entire length since the last time I was there, although parts of it are so rough and have so many potholes that the distinction is somewhat irrelevant. We made a quick stop at Jade City north of Dease Lake, and continued on to Watson Lake where the Cassiar ends at the Alcan. We were sad to see that Sally's Cafe at the junction had closed.

In spite of the cool signpost forest, Watson Lake is a rather charmless town. The next morning we headed north on the Alcan, passing through Rancheria and Teslin, where we stopped for breakfast at the lodge restaurant outside of town. Unfortunately, the owner informed us that he had a tour bus coming shortly, and wouldn't be able to serve us.

We stopped at an overlook before leaving the Alcan and riding down into Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. I noticed that the front tire on Dan's bike was badly cupped to the extent that cord was showing in places. We stopped at a convenient Yamaha dealer just outside of town, and they had a tire that would fit Dan's bike and they were also willing to work on it right away. John and I went into town and secured a place to stay, and by the time we got back to the Yamaha dealer Dan's bike was almost ready.

We continued on the Alcan past Destruction Bay - fortunately the road construction we rode through three years ago had been completed. We rode through Beaver Creek and into Alaska, not even bothering to take a picture of the welcome sign - been there, done that. We spent a very rainy night at Fast Eddie's Motel in Tok, and the next morning Dan announced that he thought he should ship his bike home from Fairbanks and fly from there to Chicago. He had a cold and bad cough when we met him in Washington, and over the next week or so the cough had become worse, and the cold and wet weather we'd been riding in certainly wasn't doing him any favors.  At Delta Junction (the junction of Highways 2 - The Alcan - and 1) we stopped for breakfast, cold and wet and hungry.




The weather began to clear when we were about 100 miles from Fairbanks, and by the time we got there it was quite pleasant. We immediately went to The Outpost motorcycle shop where Dan arranged to have his bike shipped to Chicago. After an hour or so of phone calls, he also managed to get on a flight that would take him to Chicago. We left him at the shop awaiting his ride to the airport, and John and I went back into town to find a hotel.
